The rest of Mason's Birthday

The big combined family party was the week after Mason turned two, but of course we had to celebrate on his actual birthday also.  We had planned on having a little celebration with just our family of 5, but my uncle and aunt were visiting from Idaho, along with another uncle from Utah, so we ended up having some of my mom's family over for dinner, cake, and to watch the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics.  It was fun to have them share Mason's special day.

He knew everybody was singing to him and he loved it.
 Blowing out his candle.
Cute birthday boy with his cute daddy.

That evening, he opened presents from Little Man, Kiwi, and Mike and I.  I told Little Man and Kiwi to both choose a toy from their room that they thought Mason would really like and that was special that they didn't play with anymore.  I was worried they might just come down with junk, but they both chose very sweet, thoughtful gifts and wrapped them by themselves.  Little Man gave Mason an Elmo puppet that he had loved when he was two and some of his Handy Manny tools.  Kiwi gave him a Toy Story viewfinder that double as binoculars.   The big kids were so excited to give them to him and Mason was just as excited to open them.  This is the first time he's really seemed to get the opening gifts part and it was incredibly cute to watch.  He screeched "Elmo" when he opened the puppet, clutched him to his chest and kissed him.  He immediately put the binoculars around his neck also.  If he did remember seeing the toys in the big kids room before it just made it all the more exciting to him.
Mike and I's presents to Mason were a little lawn mower to push around the backyard and a Build a Bear (which came the next day).  When Mason opened the lawn mower, he went crazy.  He just kept saying, "Mine! Mine!  Mine!"  But it wasn't that screeching, possessive normal two year old whine (which he is quite good at it).  It was more of a, "Mine?  I can't believe it!  It's just like the one at my friends house and the one I saw at the store and pointed at!  Is that really for me?  This is amazing!"  He spent a good portion of the rest of the evening outside with it while brother and sister hovered over him trying to get a turn (plenty of two year old possessive mines were thrown out then).
All three kids stayed up late with family that night as we watched the opening ceremonies.  Luckily, my children found the giant creepy baby head and the nightmare part hilarious and were laughing out loud.  It was definitely entertaining (although parts of it left us feeling confused) and it was fun to have family over to watch it with us.
The next day we took just our little family to some botanical gardens, to Build a Bear for Mason to pick out his bear, and to Red Robin for the free birthday meal.  Both the older kids have a build a bear and when I saw some discounted gift cards at Costco several months ago, we got them planning to use them for Mason's birthday so he could get a special bear also.
Mason was a little overwhelmed by all the choices, but after being wrangled back to the picking part several times, he became insistent on a "bue (blue) bear" so he got the only blue bear that they offered.  The stuffing machine scared him and he wouldn't participate with that, so Daddy held him and he watched.  He did enjoy giving his bear a "bath" and running around the store with his new stuffed animal.

It was a fun weekend and a wonderful way to celebrate our little guy.  I can hardly believe that it's been two years since he joined our family. He adds so much to our home and I love seeing the nurturing side he brings out in both his brother and sister. He is adored by all of us and I can't imagine our family without him.
